Minister Mary C. Barnes
My life began in 1934. My parents were both saved and I was “born in the church.” My
entire life revolved around church.
I was baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost at an early age and from that point on, I was
very active in the church. I taught Sunday School, was involved in the Young People’s
services. We learned many things about the Bible and did many research projects. One of
the deacons in the church was the president of the auxiliary and he kept us active in many
facets of the bible. From this experience, I received a great knowledge of the bible and this
has been invaluable to me in my spiritual life now.
I received my early teachings from a pastor who was strong in the Word and he gave us
many hours of studies. I worked hard to keep my mind sharp and enjoyed the time I spent
in studying the bible.
Because of some difficulties in the home church, we moved to another location under a new
pastor. I remained actively involved, working in the music department as pianist, choir
director and soloist. I worked in the Missionary department, the Young People’s auxiliary,
Sunday School, teaching students that were almost my own age. I now meet students that
remember those days and remind me how much they appreciated the time that I spent with
them.
God called my husband to begin his work in Aberdeen, Maryland and the church, the
Highway Holiness Church, was established. Working side by side with Suffragan Bishop
Barnes, we were able to set up a saving station in the community where we are working in
many areas of development. We have had drug programs, serving those who had no church
home with funeral services, using facilities for banquets , weddings and other personal
activities.
One big activity which was well attended was the Family & Friends Day. It was attended
by many other churches as well as members of the local community. I helped to plan some
of the activities. The food was a “give away” and was enjoyed by all.
Thus is my life and I am pleased that I am doing something that I feel is pleasing God. I am
unable to do as I would like to now because of my disability, but I am still striving to serve
God. I’ve come too far to turn around now. God has blessed me and for that I am
grateful.
